Akkademeia for Mothering Futures®
Why Akkademeia? In Sámi cosmology, Akka refers to a female spirit. The Sámi are an indigenous people whose land stretches across northern Scandinavia to the Kola Peninsula. The daughters of original mother Maderakka are Sarakka, Uksakka, and Juksakka and each female deity has a specific role in fertility, pregnancy, childbirth, and raising children.
Did you know that the word Academy derives from the Ancient Greek Akademeia? A grove of mature trees just outside of Athens was named after a male hero, Akademos. It is where Plato taught his lofty lessons, viewing himself as a philosopher king in a queenless utopia.
Our school is named Akkademeia for Mothering Futures® with a nod to the Akka spirits. We also acknowledge the matrifocal pre-Olympian Athena, a wise deity whose regenerative attributes are expressed in her association with trees. She is said to have looked over the trees of Akademeia, perhaps with a wink. Our mission with Akkademeia for Mothering Futures® is to remember, reclaim, and recenter matristic ways of knowing, being, and doing.
This is an opportunity to explore and resacralize your maternal lineages while honoring the motherlines of humanity. It is an ongoing invitation to delve into the fullness of mothering through a multi-layered reclamation. From mycorrhizal underground networks to tree rings, branches, leaves, flowers, and legacy seeds, this course enacts a metaphoric excavation and regeneration of mother-centered ways of knowing, being, and doing. Maternal knowledges and matricultural worldviews are presented, interpreted, and shown as indispensable for creating sustainable equalitarian cultures of care to nurture wisdom, dignity, resilience, and kinship for those embedded in them and impacted by them. (R)evolutionary Matrisophy©, an in-depth practice and method developed by Dr. Jessica Spring Weappa, offers a meaningful embodied reauthoring© process to benefit from for a lifetime.
Throughout seven learning modules, participants will have many opportunities to contemplate the richness and complexity of mothering in self, in family constellations, in ancestral contexts, in community, and in society. You will complete this course with a better understanding for and appreciation of the plurality of mothering and the possibilities mothering holds for better futures.
